New Moon Spread
Set an intention for the coming lunar cycle and turn it into something you can actually do. This beginner-friendly new moon tarot spread gives you five positions for reviewing what ended, choosing a beginning, identifying support and friction, and naming a first step. You read the cards as descriptions of your situation, not forecasts. The aim is one workable intention, with a concrete action for the coming two weeks rather than a demand to transform everything.

What the last cycle closed
Here, the card is read as a pattern, commitment, or chapter you can acknowledge as finished. What no longer needs carrying forward? Don't treat it as proof that unresolved feelings have disappeared.
What you want to begin
Read this card as a starting point you want to explore, not an outcome you are owed. What deserves your attention now? Choose an intention you can influence through your own actions.
What feeds it
Support is the focus: the card is read as a resource, habit, relationship, or condition that sustains your intention. What can you draw on repeatedly, rather than relying on one burst of enthusiasm?
What stands in the way
Friction is read here as a practical constraint or recurring response that complicates your beginning. What needs adjusting? Avoid automatically treating the card as an enemy, a personal failing, or a reason to stop.
The first step this cycle
Finally, the card is read as a prompt for one observable action within the coming two weeks. What can you schedule, request, practice, or complete? Replace abstractions such as “be confident” with a specific task.
How to deal it
Choose one area of life, then shuffle while holding your question in mind; stop whenever you feel ready. Deal five cards from left to right along a shallow curve, like the thin crescent that follows the new moon, with the middle card lower than the ends. Read cards 1 and 2 together as closure and beginning, then compare 3 and 4 as support and friction. Use card 5 to write one action and choose a time to try it.

When to use another spread
You need a different tool when your main question is which of two options to choose: use the Decision Spread to compare them directly. For reviewing effort and deciding what to release rather than choosing a beginning, try the Full Moon Spread. Questions about someone else's intentions or a goal's feasibility need relevant facts and conversations alongside your reflection.
New Moon Spread: questions
Do I have to read at the exact moment of the new moon?
You can lay the cards on the new moon or within a day or two afterward; matching the exact moment is not necessary for this reflective practice. Use the next new moon information shown on this page to plan your reading. A new-moon-to-new-moon cycle lasts about 29.5 days, so you have a useful interval for returning to your notes.
Does the zodiac sign of the new moon change how I read the cards?
You can use the sign as an optional theme, but it does not change the five positions. At the new moon, the Moon is in the same zodiac sign as the Sun. Keep your actual circumstances central: an astrological association can suggest a question, but it is not evidence about what you need or what happens next.
Should I use reversed cards, and what if I draw a difficult card?
You can keep every card upright while learning the layout. If you include reversed cards, decide beforehand whether you read them as blocked, internalized, or less available expressions of the card. A difficult image in the beginning or support position is not a verdict against your intention. Ask what limit, honest acknowledgment, or adjustment could make your approach more workable.
Can I use this spread to turn a wish into an action plan?
You can use it to clarify a wish, identify resources, and choose behavior that supports a goal. Drawing a card does not establish that the goal is coming to you, and intention alone does not control external conditions. After reading, write down your chosen action and what support it requires. Revisit that note after two weeks to assess what you tried and what needs changing.
