Cardology goes back to Olney H. Richmond's The Mystic Test Book (1893); later writers, Robert Lee Camp the best known of them, built on it. The arithmetic takes three lines and is the same in every source we checked.
The solar values run through the deck suit by suit, Ace low and King high inside each suit:
So 18 is the 5th card of Clubs: the Five of Clubs. April 15 gives 55 − (8 + 15) = 32, the Six of Diamonds. December 31 is the one date that comes out at 0, outside the 52, and it belongs to the Joker.
Each card's dates fall in a diagonal across the calendar: a month later, two days earlier. 9 cards get 12 birthdays a year; the Ace of Hearts, the Two of Hearts, the Queen of Spades, the King of Spades and the Joker get one each. The King of Spades, for instance, is January 1 and no other day.

December 31
Outside the usual suit and rank structure, the Joker is read as a versatile, creative personality that resists a fixed role.
In cardology, every day of the year belongs to one card of an ordinary 52-card deck, and December 31 belongs to the Joker. The card of your birthday is your birth card, and cardology reads it as a sketch of temperament: what you keep returning to and where it trips you up.
Double the month, add the day and take the total from 55. That is the solar value: Hearts run 1 to 13, Clubs 14 to 26, Diamonds 27 to 39 and Spades 40 to 52. For July 23: 2 × 7 = 14, 14 + 23 = 37, 55 − 37 = 18, the Five of Clubs.
Because the formula comes out at zero for that date alone: 55 − (2 × 12 + 31) = 0. Every other date of the year lands between 1 and 52, on a card of the deck.
No. Cardology uses only the month and day, so everyone born on the same day of the year shares a birth card. The tarot birth card works differently: it adds the year as well and lands on a Major Arcana card.
No, they are separate systems. The playing card birth card comes from cardology and the 52-card deck; the tarot birth card follows Mary K. Greer's method and the 22 Major Arcana. You can work out both, and the tarot calculator is linked below.
