Twelve Major Arcana cards engraved in gold on navy across a zodiac wheel; The Emperor is the card of Aries

Aries tarot cards

Treating Aries as shorthand for an Emperor personality reduces a set of correspondences to a character label. Read The Emperor alongside the Two of Wands, Three of Wands, and Four of Wands, and you can examine how an initiative takes shape, reaches outward, and finds a moment worth celebrating. The Queen of Wands adds the question of how you involve other people. Together, these cards let you distinguish the urge to begin from the decisions, boundaries, and relationships that give that urge a workable form.

The Emperor, the trump of Aries

Major Arcana IV · Hebrew letter Heh · Fire, cardinal

In Book T, the Hebrew letter Heh links The Emperor with Aries within the correspondence system. The letter supplies a specific connection between sign and trump; it is not a personality test. You can use that connection to explore how the impulse to initiate becomes something you can direct.

Aries is cardinal Fire: starting is central, with will and drive supplying the push. The Emperor is read as the structure that gives that push limits and assigns responsibility. If you launch a project with friends, the relevant question is not simply who takes charge, but whether you agree on who can make decisions and where each person's authority stops.

The three decans of Aries

Aries is split into three parts of 10°, and each takes one of the Wands: the suit of Fire, numbered Two to Four for a cardinal sign. Each decan also has a planet, and its trump is worth reading alongside.

Two of Wands

1st decan · 0°–10° · March 21–30 · ♂︎ Mars in Aries · Lord of Dominion

Mars in Aries puts drive directly into the act of choosing a direction. The Two of Wands is read as planning under that pressure: you want to cut through hesitation, but still need to consider the wider world beyond your immediate position. If you are deciding whether to take a project into a new market, ask what would make your choice deliberate rather than merely fast.

Planet card: The Tower (Mars)

Three of Wands

2nd decan · 10°–20° · March 31 – April 10 · ☉︎ Sun in Aries · Lord of Established Strength

Once you have begun, the Sun in Aries brings the desire to be seen into the work of reaching outward. The Three of Wands is read as expansion approached with foresight, rather than visibility pursued for its own sake. When you prepare to present a proposal beyond your usual circle, ask whether you have considered what that audience needs to understand, not just what you want to show.

Planet card: The Sun (Sun)

Four of Wands

3rd decan · 20°–30° · April 11–20 · ♀︎ Venus in Aries · Lord of Perfected Work

Making room for enjoyment gives Venus in Aries a different expression of initiative: taking the lead in creating ease with others. The Four of Wands is read as a deliberate pause to appreciate completed work together. If you organize a meal after your team finishes a demanding project, ask whether you can stop directing the work long enough to enjoy everyone's company.

Planet card: The Empress (Venus)

The court card of Aries

Queen of Wands

20° Pisces – 20° Aries · March 11 – April 10 · Water of Fire

Because her span begins in Pisces and extends into Aries, the Queen of Wands is read as a court correspondence shared across the signs, not an exclusively Aries personality. Her Water of Fire title offers a way to consider warmth alongside the impulse to act. When you lead a new group, that might look like welcoming a hesitant participant before asking them to contribute. The King of Pentacles covers the final third of Aries, so the Queen does not represent the whole sign.

The last 10° of Aries (April 11–20) belong to the King of Pentacles, which runs on to 20° Taurus.

The court card of each sign starts in the sign before it, so neighbors share a stretch of the sky.
